Long Hair 'Do Care
Hey hey! It has been a long time coming for me to share what I have been doing this year to help grow my hair out. Now let me preface this post by saying I feel as though I have been trying to grow my hair out since the 8th grade where I must say I did have a very adorable shoulder length haircut that suited me (thank you mom, and thank you for not letting me dye my hair bright blonde even though it seemed as if alllllll my friends could and I would beg you to the point of tears, both yours and mine... kidding).
Ever since I was a little tot I have had naturally curly hair, I grew up in the sun day in and day out not to mention swimming in chlorinated pools all over the greater Los Angeles area. I grew up in the 90's to 2000's where crimping and straightening your hair every day (straight until limp basically) was the absolute standard. All of these factors contributed to my hair problem that I discovered later in life. I have extremely fine and dry hair and it did not occur to me to ever take care of it until I was in college. After what seemingly felt like years on end trying to grow it, never cut it and just pray that it would grow, I began to become very frustrated. I tried a lot of things, taking biotin, conditioning treatments, complaining to ever hairstylist in sight, I finally met one who gave it to me straight (no pun intended). She told me that if I wanted my hair to grow, I would have to cut most it off because it was mostly dead. No wonder it seemed as though it was not growing! She explained that although my hair is always growing from its root, if I have dead ends, they will just keep splitting higher and higher.
So we cut it all off. And basically to no avail because it still did not seem to be growing. Finally, I heard a small voice inside my head reminding me of something else she told me (now, I am truly carrying on wayyyy to long about hair and being a complete prima-donna so if you are still with me, wow, you're a trooper!). You want to know what she had said? She said stop styling it. Never use heating products your hair.... ever. EVER?! Ever. Ugh. Well, I finally stopped styling it about last year! I don't miss it to be honest, I always have been into the be achy, boho look and as long as I do not wash it and sleep on it, I can usually make it curl naturally in a goodish shape. You just have to figure out what works for you, sometimes that means sleeping with curlers in your hair or something... you 'do you (pun intended).
I have learned so many tips and tricks along the way. I have to say I still feel as though it is taking forever for my hair to grow out but I have seen a huge difference in it since using these items that I am about to share. And if you have normal hair that does grow and likes you and all that, these things will most certainly work for you because if they worked for me slightly, they will work for your doubly! Also, might I add, these are tips I have gathered through the years of researching, article reading, nutrition studying and of course, relying on the advice of faithful, and generous friends. Thank you for coming along my hair journey and although this is really not one of the most important things in life, it matters enough for me to be curious and want to see if I can change my body through diet, nutrition, vitamins, etc. Usually you can!
Here is what I use for hair growth and trust me the benefits are not just longer hair! Incorporate these things for stronger hair, nails and body. Plump skin, a healthy glow, energy and general wellness.
- Collagen powder
- B12 Supplements (Which by the way, the BEST way to get adequate B12 in your diet is through animal products. So make sure to eat organic, grass-fed, free range animal products) I just like these because they taste yummy!!
- Coconut oil masks (Once a week before washing hair) - The night before you wash your hair, massage coconut oil throughout your hair and in your scalp and wrap hair in a bun and sleep on it. In the morning, thoroughly wash clean
- Only washing my hair once a week (I recently started using Beautycounter hair products because they are safe and do not use harmful chemicals, toxins, parabens, nor do they test on animals and they work really really well!)
- Never putting heat on my hair
- Moroccanoil hair oil (it is the real deal!)
- Fish oil (try the liquid you take with a teaspoon instead of capsules, when chatting with the gal at the health food store, she said this works much better and faster.)
A couple more tips for hair growth.... Try incorporating avocado, raw almonds, olive oil and wild-caught salmon into your diet if you do not already. I love eating all these things and they are very nutritious for you and contribute to hair growth!
Hope this is not boring and also: helpful! Here are some links to help you track down products!
